Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare has today finally introduced legislation to establish an R18+ category for video games in Australia. Assuming it is passed without incident, the Federal Government's legislation is scheduled to come into effect on 1 January 2013.

"The R18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material," said Clare.

Extensive public consultation conducted over the past two years has shown strong support in favour of this reform.

"This reform has been a long time coming," said Clare during his second reading of the bill to the House.

"A lot of Australians are passionate about this reform."

According to Clare this bill will implement the Commonwealth's obligations and State and Territory jurisdictions will follow with their own legislation later this year.

All I can say is finally, Australian Government have seen reason to create a category for games that needed to exist. Fingers crossed this reform is passed without incident.

I know, Bowl. Another whole year, before Aussie gamers get to enjoy all games, plus Developers will no longer need to cut content for the Aussie market either.
